How do we treat problems with mastication?
Often we fail to notice grinding (bruxism) or clenching of teeth. These are natural spasms, with various causes, which can potentially raise the muscular tension and cause pain during mastication.
Teeth grinding, the cause of which is not yet known, is incurable. However, lifestyle adjustments to reduce stress can have a positive impact on a patient’s teeth grinding and muscular tension. Where recommended, a resin night-guard may be used to preserve the integrity of the surface of the teeth and attempt to reduce the muscular tension (“bite”).

What is gnathology?
Gnathology is the field of dentistry studying the masticatory system – the way in which the teeth, muscles and movement of the two arches interact with each other when they came into contact during mastication, deglutition and phonation.
